For one reason or another, most of the officials elected in May do not want to reveal their assets. According to Hoy newspaper, only 79 of the newly elected members of Congress, new mayors and hundreds of council members have filed their asset statements. According to Joaquin Bido Medina who heads the National Anti-Corruption and Ethics Commission, very few have availed themselves of the online facilities for filing their asset declarations. He said that the government loses its authority to ask the people to be ethical when even government officials fail to fulfill their obligations. Bido Medina also mentioned a letter from the acting coordinator of DEPRECO, the government's main anti-corruption department, which clearly revealed the preoccupation with this attitude from so many elected officials. Bido Medina gently pointed out that DEPRECO's Octavio Lister Henriquez is also the Dominican Republic's assistant Attorney General, and that his sworn declaration of assets must be filed via the www.dpca.gov.do (http://www.dpca.gov.do) website. Bido Medina emphasized that this was just one example of the government's efforts towards improving government transparency.
