The National Federation of Merchants and Businessmen (FENACERD) is complaining about a shortage of sugar on the local market and has asked the government to authorize an import quota that will be financed 50/50 by the sugar growers and the merchants. FENACERD president Antonio Cruz Rojas said that the current 90/10 split of the import payments seemed to reward the sugar growers' inefficiencies, and limits any price reduction of the staple. Cruz Rojas argued for a quota to be assigned to the merchants, since this would lead to a price reduction at the retail level.
