Mexican ambassador Isabel Tellez de Ortega has revealed that the current stalemate in the talks between Verizon and the DR's tax department (DGII) has stalled possible investments from other Mexican sources until the outcome is clarified. Tellez de Ortega told Hoy reporters that Mexican investors are confident about the Dominican Republic's prospects for the future, and proof of this is the US$2.0 billion investment being made by Carlos Slim Helu in the purchase of Verizon Dominicana. She said that other Mexican investors are waiting for the outcome of the impasse between Verizon and the tax department. The ambassador said that Slim Helu is a well-known businessman and that his investments would help the DR. Acting almost as a Slim spokesperson, the ambassador said that the billionaire was waiting for things to be cleared up since he was not going to take on any more debts. Mexican investments in the Dominican Republic are currently said to stand at US$1.3 billion. The tax department is requesting that Verizon pay taxes on the capital gains.
