A Colombian molecular biologist is training Dominican counterparts in the science of genetics as applied to certain types of crops that will enter the world markets. Carlos Fernandez Vergara will spend two months teaching advanced techniques in molecular biology at the Institute for Biotechnology and Industrial Innovations (IIBI). The new technologies will permit the identification of different crop varieties and the production of ideal crops. According to Hoy, the advantages of these technological innovations are the fact that samples will no longer be needed, varieties will be defined and hybrids will be certified. Each of these advantages will assist the exporter by providing uniform crops that will conform to international market demands.
