Labor Minister Max Puig has warned the contractors working with the Pueblo Viejo Dominican Corporation (PVDC) that they need to recognize the right of workers to unionize, as reported in Listin Diario. He made the comment as PVDC workers under contract with Barrick Gold for its operations in Sanchez Ramirez province (Cotui) went on strike demanding that the company comply with the Labor Code. He said the company is violating Conventions 87 and 98 of which the country is a signatory with the International Labor Organization.
As reported in El Nacional, the Barrick Gold mine workers, included Dominicans and Peruvians, went on strike demanding the company pay the full severance payments due to dismissed workers.
