Santiago prosecutor Yenni Berenice Reynoso has commented on the release on bail of three men accused of multi million-peso fraud against Customs in Santiago. She said the decision was "estranged from the gravity of the charges" against Herald Estevez Pena, Miguel Angel Lazala and Adalberto Rosa Rosario, as reported in El Caribe. She said it is a complex case.
Appeals Court prosecutor Vielka Calderon justified the release on the grounds that the accused had been cleared of arms and money trafficking, as reported in the press. She said they had been suspended from their jobs for a month and that the case is being heard according to the principles set out in the Penal Code.
News reports indicate that the three have strong connections with leading figures in the ruling PLD party.
