Ultra distance open water swimming champion Marcos Diaz has completed his final swim in the One Man - Five Continents -- Many Voices program. Seeking to raise awareness of the UN Millennium Development goals (MDGs), he swam to connect the world's five continents in four tough swims touching eight countries. He completed his final swim from Big Diomedes Island in Russia to Little Diomedes Island in Alaska yesterday. The English Channel swimmer described it as the most difficult he had ever done. To complete the program, he will carry out a symbolic swim from the Statue of Liberty to the UN headquarters in New York in September.
As reported in Hoy, he said that he swam accompanied by killer whales and walruses and temperatures ranging from 1.8C to 3C for an hour and five minutes. The currents carried him at a speed of 4.1km/hour.
