Although hurricane Earl, which acquired category 1 and could go to 3, still does not represent any danger for the Dominican Republic, the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) issued an early warning yesterday because it estimates that the effects will be felt tomorrow with 20mm to 50 mm of rain (? inch to 2 inches) of rain and 6 to 9-foot waves along the country's northern and eastern coasts. The early warning was issued because of the risk that tropical storm conditions could affect the areas from Cabo Engano to La Romana and from Cabo Engano to Samana, including Saona Island, and the provinces of La Altagracia, Hato Mayor and El Seibo. The authorities estimated yesterday that the areas under alert could be affected within 48 hours or less.
As reported in Diario Libre, yesterday the center of tropical storm Earl was located near latitude 17.7 North and longitude 61.3 West, some 160 miles east of Barbuda, and some 300 kilometers east of Saint Maarten (Lesser Antilles) and moving at 22 kph with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami issued a hurricane warning for the islands of Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Anguilla, Saint Maarten, Saint Barts, Saba, St. Eustatius, and the British and US Virgin Islands. A hurricane advisory is in effect for Puerto Rico including the islands of Culebra and Vieques. Onamet weather forecaster Luis Felipe Jerez advised owners of small and medium sized boats to stay in port along the north and east coasts of the DR because waves are likely to increase gradually from yesterday night. He called on the civil rescue organizations to monitor the development of hurricane Earl over the next 24 hours.
