Lack of maintenance has traffic lights at important city intersections out of service. The many out of service make life harder for pedestrians and traffic bottlenecks more unbearable and endless delays more frequent. Hoy reports that Metropolitan Transport Authority agents are notoriously lacking where they should be.
Hoy reports that the traffic lights at the important intersections of the Malecon and Maximo Gomez, the 27 de Febrero and Leopoldo Navarro and Luperon and 27 de Febrero, Bolivar and Tiradentes are out of order bringing chaos to those crossings.
After press reports of the too many traffic lights out of operation, the Ministry of Public Works responded it had already contracted in July a company to fix the problem at a cost of US$4.6 million. The Ministry said Consorcio Icontrolt -Global Capital won the tender for the maintenance of the traffic lights.
Nevertheless, 7dias.com.do news portal says the chosen company is "mysterious" as are its offices at No. 154 Abraham Lincoln Avenue. At the insistence of journalists from 7dias.com.do, the receptionist said her boss was Carlos Zabala but that she had no idea when he would be in the office and that she did not have authorization to give his cell phone. 7dias.com.do reports that despite meriting a US$4.6 million contract from the government, the small office of the company strangely had scant furniture.
7dias.com.do reports that only two years ago the government invested US$3.5 million in the installation of intelligent traffic lights in the National District. The plan was to install 700 of these at 360 intersections.
