Of 37,158 babies born in maternity wards at public hospitals in the first half of the year, 6,075 were born to foreign mothers, of these 98% Haitians, as reported in Diario Libre. Stats of the Ministry of Public Health say that 36,606 babies were born alive and 539 were born dead.
The Ministry of Public Health says that last year it spent RD$400 million in medical attention to Haitians citizens. Government statistics show that in 2009, 385,037 foreigners received services at public hospitals in 2009.
But this year expenditures are expected to increase to RD$1 billion, given the increase in demand for services after the collapse of medical system in Haiti following the 12 January earthquake.
This compares to the RD$1.53 billion the Dominican government spent attending Haitian patients from 2005 to 2008.
The Ministry says that 15,809 foreign mothers required medical consultations at public hospitals during the first six months of 2010.
At the leading maternity hospital in the country, La Altagracia in Santo Domingo 25,000 babies were born last year. Of these an estimated 9% were born to Haitian mothers, many who arrived from Haiti to give birth.
Many mothers-to-be arrive with serious medical complications that raise the mortality rate in the country. The director of the maternity, Dr. Juan Cid Troncoso said that of the 29 maternal deaths registered at the hospital this year, eight are of Haitians.
