Egg producers say there is at present a monthly surplus of 15 million eggs, as reported in the Listin Diario. Production is now at 165 million units and the monthly demand is 150 million. Egg producers say they sell the eggs to distributors for RD$2 the unit, but the shops are selling these for RD$5 and not passing the savings on to consumers. They explained they have dropped prices RD$0.60 the unit to distributors because they cannot store the eggs that long.
The president of the Association of Egg Producers (Asohuevos), Manuel Escano feels the drop in prices would bring about the needed increase in demand. He said that egg producers profitability is being affected.
