Organic farming exports are up this year. El Caribe reports that in the DR there are 98,110.23 hectares dedicated to organic production, and 13,660 farmers, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. Stats from the Center for Export and Investment of the DR (CEI-RD) indicates that in the first seven months of the year, organic exports were US$77.9 million, for 97.2 million kilograms. This is US$32.3 million (70.8%) more than these exports for the same period in 2009. The main organic exports are: bananas, cacao, coffee, coconuts, mangos, Persian limes, avocados, ginger. On a smaller scale, eggplant, peppers, tobacco and pineapple.
In the DR, there are three agencies that certify organic production: BCS Dominicana, IMO Caribe, Suelo y Salud Dominicana.
Organic farming works in harmony with nature and uses techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and biological pest control.
