Forecasts are for rain, high surf and strong winds in the east and north of the country. With news reports raising awareness in the country to the path of category 4 Hurricane Earl, Santo Domingo residents were surprised when torrential rains did not happen in the evening nor the next morning through noon. Just sweltering heat and high humidity on the south coast, and light constant rain in Punta Cana with high surf in the morning. Reports also for heavy rain and gutsy winds in Samana in the morning.
Local weather forecasters warned of rains for the north coast (from Montecristi to Espaillat) and heavy rains for the east coast from La Romana to Samana. The storm was expected to pass 300-350 kms northeast of Punta Cana.
Meanwhile, Puerto Ricans flew to the DR to safeguard their small airplanes at terminals Las Americas, La Isabela and Maria Montez (Barahona).
News reports indicate that American Eagle flights 4836 and 1901 were cancelled, and American Airlines 1857 and 532 also. Also suspended were Jet Blue flights 1735 and 1736 to and from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
And Royal Caribbean cruise ship line said it diverted its Enchantment of the Seas vessels from St. Thomas for a stopover in Samana, due to weather conditions.
Hurricane Fiona seems to be following in the footsteps of Earl, but forecasters say she also will pass to the north of the country. Gaston is another storm moving from the West that needs to be monitored.
September is the peak season for hurricanes in the Caribbean and the Atlantic Basin.
