Listin Diario reports on the main causes of deaths in the Dominican Republic. The report indicates that heart attacks (12.2%), strokes (9.7%) and pulmonary arrests (7.1%) are the leading causes of death in the world, but in the DR the main causes are heart attack (28.4%), strokes (9.4%), and traffic accident (8.3%).
As explained, the high incidence of heart and stroke deaths in the country is attributed to: inadequate health systems and infrastructure that exclude the poor; lack of preventive health programs; curative medicine is big business; low educational levels of the population to catch diseases in time; and limited or low coverage of the social security programs.
