The National District prosecutor office and the National Auto Parts and Accessories Retailers Association (Anaderavem) have agreed on controls to curb the theft of car parts in the city. District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, Anaderavem president Marino Robles Gonzalez and former association president Jose Francisco Liz signed the agreement during a press conference at the Palace of Justice in Ciudad Nueva, as reported in Diario Libre. Moscoso said that prosecutor offices in the barrios continuously receive complaints about robbery of parts and accessories. The agreement calls for a crackdown on hustlers who prowl the used part stores in search of buyers for stolen parts.
Moscoso Segarra called on the public to go to commercial establishments that are identified as authorized to sell parts and accessories.
Robles Gonzalez said dealers needed to obtain valid documents that showed the origin of the merchandise they sell to stop the theft of car parts and accessories.
He warned that the theft of parts and of vehicles for dismantling is an evil that affects the whole country and is getting worse every day.
"It has gone so far, this evil, that last week they stole a truck that had a Customs container, and they took the container", he said.
The agreement calls for future periodic inspections by the District Attorney and Anaderavem to ensure that the parts distributors are not from dubious sources.
They will also implement a structure to identify vehicle parts that are sold in establishments with a history that shows the process all the way to the distributor.
The hustlers on Moca, Seibo, and Marcos Ruiz streets in the barrios of Villa Juana and Villas Agricolas fear that the District Attorney's decision will leave them without a job. "Here there are thieves. But for one, we all pay", said "El Charman", one of the hustlers in the area. Wilton Danilo, who also works at obtaining parts, says that some people steal "plastic bumpers, trim pieces, windshield wipers, rearview mirrors, hubcaps" and other external parts. "Those of us who work with mechanics are mostly not thieves", he said.
