The Cardio-Neuro-Ophthalmological and Transplant Center (Cecanot) has become the most efficient and modern center in the country for the treatment of highly complex illnesses. It is an option for poor patients who in the past would have been condemned to death because of lack of funds, as reported in Diario Libre.
Diario Libre reports that people from all over the country have benefitted from kidney and cornea transplants, the removal of cerebral tumors, and others have resolved their cardiac problems free of charge at the health center.
Inaugurated in 2008, the Cecanot, which is directed by Dr. Federico Nunez, has the latest medical equipment, including a neuro-navigator (the only one in the country) that works with software that reduces the duration of a surgical procedure from eight to just three hours.
Located in the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City, the government set up the center as an alternative for low-income patients under the new, decentralized model of hospitals which guarantee quality medical care and are self-financing.
The center also provides an alternative solution for affiliates of the Health Insurance Providers (ARS) and for companies that can include it in their catalogue of Health Service Providers.
The Cecanot has capacity for 52 patients, including 14 intensive care patients. Dr. Nunez says that they have provided more than 52,000 consultations during the first year of operations and that this total is set to increase in 2010. He said that the great demand for services and the government subsidy, of RD$14 million per month, have enabled a financial balance. Public acceptance is evident in the areas of consultation at the center, and to hear the patients tell it, this is due to the wide range of services, quality of service and low prices.
The hospital offers four basic specialties: all aspects of ophthalmology, both clinical and surgical, cardiology and everything related to hemodynamics. This means catheterizations, pacemakers, valvotomies, and all types of cardiac surgeries. The other areas of specialization are neurosurgery and transplants. In the former category, the hospital has a wide range of sub-specialties as well as surgery to correct cerebral aneurisms, neuro-endoscopy, pediatric surgery and others. In the area of transplants, they do kidneys, corneas, hip and knee replacements and they are preparing for liver transplants. Moreover, they offer dialysis. Nunez announced that they would be opening an ear, nose and throat (ENT) facility in the next few months.
