The Fernandez administration has 325 deputy ministers on its payroll at its 20 ministries, according to a report in today's Listin Diario. A bill is proposed to reduce this number to 25, and the number of secretaries without portfolio to only 3. Deputy minister of Public Administration Gregorio Montero said that the bill seeks to regulate the number of "advisors" the President has appointed without assigning them any work. The number of secretaries without portfolio has not been reported.
Politician Ismael Reyes says that more than 8,000 people are on the Presidential Palace payroll, mostly appointed for political patronage reasons. Furthermore, he said the government needed to revise the number of people appointed to overseas missions and the levels of government officials' wages.
