Ignacio Mendez, president of the Association of Industrialists, has called on the government to curb corruption in order to release resources to be used to cover the fiscal deficit without having to impose further taxes on productive sectors. He said that the Department for the Prevention of Administrative Corruption has given a lead to the high cost of that evil when pointing out that in 10 years it has cost the country RD$104 billion. He said that if the government would strictly apply regulations and anti-corruption laws it would not have to burden the sectors that create jobs nor would its institutional image continue to deteriorate, as reported in El Dia.
Mendez made these comments at a time when the Department of Customs has decided to get businesses benefitted by Law 392 of Pro Industry to pay taxes upfront, in violation of the law.
"The government insists in violating Law 392 of Pro Industry to obtain minimal resources that are not a solution to the fiscal problem, when it could cut its own spending and apply controls to the centrifuge of corruption with better results," said Mendez.
