How many dollars are moved each day in the local exchange market? How much do Dominicans receive from their relatives abroad? The daily average that changes hands in the exchange market in the country is around US$47.8 million, and the monthly average is US$1.43 billion, according to statistics compiled from money exchange agents financial statements for the first half of the year. The six-month figure is at US$8.609 billion.
Diario Libre reports that the daily average of remittances sent to the country gives a daily average of US$7.9 million and a monthly average of US$239.7 million
According to the Central Bank's Preliminary Report on the Economy, the financial entities and exchange houses dollar transactions grew by 19.2% in the first half of the year, going from US$7.22 billion in the first half of 2009 to US$8.61 in the first half of 2010.
What this means is that the country had greater movement of international commerce in 2010. Of the US$8.61 billion in money exchange operations, exchange agents reported US$587.2 million, which means that the commercial banks moved US$8.021 billion in the first semester of the year.
The financial intermediaries sold US$6.480 billion in the first half of 2009, equal to a total of 89.7% of the total money exchanged. In the same period this year, the amount grew to US$8.02 billion, which means that the banks moved 93.2% of the market.
