The nation's political parties and civil society organizations are watching the selection process for the new magistrates of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and the members of the Chamber of Accounts (CC). Currently, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies are responsible for the selection. The groups are seeking transparency and fairness in the composition of these two bodies.
According to Diario Libre, Servio Tulio Castanos Guzman of Finjus (Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice) said that his organization would try and make sure that the selection process of the judges of the JCE and the members of the Chamber of Accounts would take place based on a consensus and with all the members of society taking part, but his group would not promote any particular candidates. The Senate of the Republic has until 16 October to designate the five members and their substitutes for the Central Electoral Board. They have received eight nominations.
The Special Commission that was appointed to study the nominations is chaired by Senator Cristina Lizardo Mezquita, and includes Julio Cesar Valentin, Jose Rafael Vargas, Ruben Dario Cruz Ubiera, Francisco Vargas Francisco, Feliz Maria Vasquez Espinal, and the spokesman for the PLD bloc of senators, Felix Maria Nova Paulino.
The Chamber of Deputies has received 52 nominations for the members of the Chamber of Accounts, the body that will be appointed from a list that will be sent to the Senate of the Republic over the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, the Senate has received eight proposals for members and substitutes of the Central Electoral Board, including Porfirio Veras Mercedes, Nery Altagracia Valerio Jimenez, Julian Elias Nolasco German, Pedro Antonio Mateo Imbert and Gloria Rosalia Mejia Cruz.
