The Department of Taxes (DGII) is working on a mechanism to make sure winners in the National Lottery and betting shops pay taxes on their prize money. There are approximately 24,000 betting shops in the DR. Germania Montas, acting director of the DGII, said the initiative is in line with International Monetary Fund pressure on the government to increase tax collections.
The winners' earnings would be subject to a 15% tax, as ruled by law. She said so far only the larger companies, namely the National Lottery and Leidsa had been paying the tax, as reported in El Caribe.
Montas said that tax collections are 2% below estimates, mainly because of a drop in fuel taxation. The DGII is looking for new areas to boost collections.
El Caribe reports that the DGII received RD$193 billion last year from payments filed by 250,000 taxpayers, including companies and individuals.
