The Chamber of Deputies approved a resolution yesterday that condemns the "abuses, excesses and violations of basic rights" committed by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) against drivers of vehicles and motorcycles all over the country, as reported in Diario Libre. The resolution calls on the agents and the director of Amet to limit themselves to complying with law 393-97 and Law 241 on Land Transport, that define their area of competence and their attributions.
Senator Wilton Guerrero protested most energetically against the abuses and violations of the law that AMET agents are committing. He said that the agents are following instructions from their director Major General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminian. He complained that the authorities are causing the motoconcho and vehicle drivers to abandon legal and socially productive activities in order to turn to crime. "The AMET agents treat citizens with arrogance, with haughtiness, with an intolerant and repressive character, and they hit them for the slightest reason".
