The current issue of Baseball Digest has recognized the work of Steve Pindar and his Roberto's Kids. The organization continues the legacy of Puerto Rican baseball player Roberto Clemente, who died at 38 when on his way to Nicaragua to deliver aid to earthquake victims. Roberto's Kids is very active bringing baseball equipment to children and young people in the Dominican Republic. The organization works with baseball leagues, charitable organizations, individuals and retailers in the US, Canada and Latin America. Their collection drives enable children to play baseball with new or lightly worn equipment.
The organization came about when Stephen Pindar and his family observed children in the DR playing baseball with broomsticks for bats, rocks for bases and rolled-up cloth from discarded dress hems for balls. Baseball Digest reports that Roberto's Kids has delivered real equipment to these children and a sense of community.
