Major League Baseball has dealt a hard blow to the Dominican Winter League, when it released the names of 83 ballplayers who cannot participate in the Dominican professional baseball winter tournament. The ban is aimed at protecting the players from extreme fatigue or injuries.
The worst affected teams are the Tigres del Licey with 17, and the Leones del Escogido with 15. The Aguilas del Cibao have 14, the Toros del Este have 10, the Gigantes del Cibao have 10 and the Estrellas Orientales have 9. These prohibitions are certain to take away some of the sparkle from the spectacle that should be the best of the best.
What is taken into account to be included on the list of extreme fatigue? This is interesting data.
The players are said to be ineligible to begin playing in the winter leagues when they have had these work quotas: Pitchers: 160 innings at the Major League level; 160 innings at AAA; 155 in AA; 130 in A ball; 75 innings in Short A ball and rookies only 70 innings or the sum of innings in different levels.
Batters: At the Major League level, 502 plate appearances; AAA, AA, or A level, 550 at bats.
Catchers: Major League, 600 innings catching; AAA, AA or A (700 innings) and in the short season A leagues, 550 innings catching.
Beginning on the first of December, the winter teams have the right to request a revision of the cases of their players who were impeded from beginning the tournament. The agreement is in force until 2013 and the Major Leagues could request a review in 2012.
Pitchers:
Alex Colome (Tampa), Rubby de la Rosa (Dodgers), Daniel Corcino (Cincinnati), Samuel Jean (Baltimore), Williams Princivil (Baltimore) are projected to go over the inning pitched and therefore will be added to the list.
