Athletes who won medals at the Central American & Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico and the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore received RD$18,485,000 in cash prizes at the Presidential Palace yesterday. President Leonel Fernandez headed the awards ceremony to reward the efforts of 93 athletes who won medals. The DR won 138 medals in 32 sports at the Puerto Rico games, as reported in Diario Libre.
Athletes winning individual gold received RD$125,000 each, silver winners got RD$100,000 and bronze medalists RD$75,000. The baseball, handball and volleyball teams that won gold received RD$500,000, the teams that received silver RD$200,000 and bronze medalists received RD$200,000. Luguelin Santos and Gustavo Dionisio were assigned government apartments. Santos also received RD$200,000 for his medals in Singapore.
