The DR continues in the bottom third in the overall rankings in The Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011, released by the World Economic Forum yesterday. The DR ranked 101st of 139 countries. Last year the DR was ranked 97th out of a list of 133 countries.
The DR did poorly in the pillars of competitiveness. It ranked: institutions (117th), infrastructure (107th), goods market efficiency (109th), innovation (118th), higher education and training (99th), innovation and sophistication (99th), financial market development (99th), labor market efficiency (89th), macroeconomic environment (88th), business sophistication (82nd), and market size (71st). In the first half, the DR only ranked well in technological readiness (66th).
Switzerland is the most competitive country, followed by Sweden, Singapore and the United States. China is ranked 27th. In Latin America, the DR is ranked, well below Chile (30th), Puerto Rico (41st), Barbados (43rd), Panama (53rd), Costa Rica (56th), Brazil (58th), Mexico (66th), Colombia (68th), Peru (73rd), Guatemala (78th), El Salvador (82nd), Trinidad & Tobago (84th), Argentina (87th), Honduras (91st), Jamaica (95th) and Dominican Republic (101st). The DR placed in the bottom third of the rankings. Only Ecuador (105th), Bolivia (108th), Guyana (110th), Nicaragua (112th), Paraguay (120th), Venezuela (122nd) ranked worse than the DR in the Americas.
The Report contributes to the understanding of the key factors determining economic growth, helps to explain why some countries are more successful than others in raising income levels and opportunities for their respective populations, and offers policymakers and business leaders an important tool in the formulation of improved economic policies and institutional reforms.
