The cost of cleaning up the National District will reach a billion pesos by the end of the year, at the current rate of RD$86 million a month, according to the Urban Sanitation department. Director Jose Miguel Martinez Guridy told Diario Libre reporters that they spend about RD$3 million a day on garbage collection in the National District, and the costs tend to increase due to the increase in the cost of running the trucks (fuel and parts), and there is more refuse every day.
In fact, the total cost of the collection will go up by 4% in November when the automatic RD$700 per day increase goes into effect for the 48 trucks that are rented and operate in the three districts of the nation's capital. This increase will boost the cost from RD$86 million a month, the current average, to RD$90 million. According to the load capacity, the route, the minimum tonnage and the type of waste, the trucks charge, until October of this year, RD$1,000, RD$1,300, and RD$1,500 a day; these prices will increase by RD$700 each in November.
The increase in the tariff, 70% in the highest instance and 46% in the lowest, is due to the increase in one additional ton required from all of the service providers. This means that the trucks that deposited a minimum of four tons a day will increase to five tons a day in order to collect the daily rent, and the same thing for those that deposited just one ton will have to duplicate their efforts.
