Since the earthquake that affected Haiti on 12 January, cases of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases have increased in the Dominican Republic. According to pneumology specialists who met in a congress in Santiago, the increase is due to the lack of border controls and the increase in illegal migration from Haiti. According to the doctors, they are currently registering some 30 cases of the disease a day in public and private health centers.
At the close of the Third International Pneumological Congress and the Second Pneumo-pediatric Congress, the president of the Northern Region Pneumological Society (Neumonorte), Dr. Plutarco Arias, said that in the northern region alone medical centers are reporting between six and seven tuberculosis cases a day. According to statistics released at the congress, 16% of HIV+ (or AIDS) patients in the Cibao region suffer from TB. Arias told Diario Libre that the Dominican authorities should redouble their efforts against tuberculosis.
