While it does not currently represent a threat to the Dominican Republic, the National Meteorological Office (Onamet) is keeping an eye on Igor, the ninth named storm of the current hurricane season. Within 24 hours, Igor went from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of over 200 kilometers per hour (135 mph). The National Hurricane Center in Miami has indicated that Igor will turn to the north within the next day or so, and there is only a slight chance that the storm will affect land if the forecast course is maintained.
In the meantime, a low-pressure area that came up from the southeast of the Caribbean Sea has led the Emergency Operations Center (COE) to place 15 provinces and the National District on alerts ranging from green to red. Torrential downpours flooded many major streets in Santo Domingo on Sunday. According to reports, the low-pressure area could become a hurricane in the next 24 hours. The COE issued red alerts for San Cristobal, San Juan de la Maguana and Barahona provinces. Likewise a yellow alert was issued for Peravia (Bani), San Jose de Ocoa, Azua, San Pedro de Macoris, Monte Plata, Santo Domingo, the National District, Samana and Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua). Green alerts went out to La Romana, La Altagracia (Higuey), El Seibo and Hato Mayor.
COE chief General Juan Mendez told reporters that so far no-one had been displaced by flooding or landslides.
