500 soldiers for border guard

Next January, a specialized guard with more than 500 soldiers will begin operating in the provinces of Dajabon, Elias Pina, Jimani and Pedernales. According to Armed Forces Minister Admiral Sigfrido Pared Perez, the force would maximize security and surveillance along the Haitian border. Diario Libre reports the border guard is part of a strategic plan designed over the past two years. The minister referred to improvements in the physical conditions of military structures along the border, as well as new vehicles, communications and office equipment, and better meals for personnel have already been implemented. Recent reports point to the widespread people and goods smuggling that takes place over the border that is already under considerable military surveillance.
