Earning as much as twice their salary in the Police Department, 1,037 officers and agents were working in public and private offices until Decree 317-06 ordered them back to patrolling duties. Police Chief Bernardo Santana Paez said the number of agents does not include those who were patrolling streets this morning nor the group that registered yesterday with Coroners Rafael Ortega Martinez and Isaias Santana Morillo, from the Human Resources Department. The officers and agents are being reinserted in surveillance and citizen security operations.
Several agents, nevertheless, presented their resignation, preferring to continue on with their other jobs, where they expected compensatory raises from their bosses.
The agents responded this time to the request for them to return to the Police after the Police Department ordered that those who did not report to the department this week would be considered force deserters.
