Two construction companies and a union official said yesterday that the government should not halt the construction of the Metro 2 line in Santo Domingo. They argue that this would have a negative impact on the economy and would also represent a danger to drivers from the extensive open ditches and construction equipment. The president of the Dominican Chamber of Construction Companies, Diego de Moya, builder Cristian Maluf and union boss Rafael Abreu agreed on the evident slowing of the Metro construction.
Economist Andy Dauhajre said yesterday that the difficulties in the construction of the second stage of the Metro were predictable because only RD$701 million had been set aside for the project in the 2010 budget, as reported in Hoy. He said that as Congress has not approved the project, it does not appear on the balance sheets. He wondered about the source of the funds that the government is transferring to the metro construction.
