The National Emergency Commission is confident it is prepared to tackle any catastrophes that may occur during this active hurricane season. September is the peak month for hurricanes in the Caribbean.
In an interview reported in Hoy, General Juan Manuel Mendez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations (COE) and Gloria Ceballos, in charge of the National Metereological Office (ONAMET), said the National Emergency Plan coordinates the work of 22 government entities.
General Mendez says they primarily focus on prevention. "We have had great success preventing, the media has helped a lot by promoting our alerts and recommendations," he explained. He said the Ministry of Education has planned to include in school class programs this year lessons to be learned in the case of earthquakes.
During the interview, Ceballos of Onamet called for international funding for a radar that would be located in Montecristi, in the northwest, that would cover the border zone, and also the northwest and southwest and Haiti. She said Haiti does not have weather forecasting equipment. The radar costs US$2 million and would complement the radar the Puntacana Group installed in the East to service the Punta Cana International Airport. That radar has a reach of 300 kilometers, which nevertheless is insufficient for the entire island because of the mountain ranges.
The COE is also active in the prevention of traffic accidents, especially during domestic holidays, such as Easter and Christmas.
