President Leonel Fernandez was not short on promises during yesterday's visit to the southwestern province of Pedernales. The list of promised public works include two housing projects (RD$113 million), paving of 17kms of city roads (RD$200 million), reconstruction of the Nizaito irrigation channel (RD$100 million) and an aqueduct (RD$50 million). He also pledged the construction of the Pedernales-Agua Negra highway (RD$360 million) and the bridge linking the province to Barahona.
Fernandez, who was in Pedernales to chair a Presidential Council meeting, spent two hours listening to citizens' concerns. He confronted his ministers on works that had been promised in the past and not completed, while explaining that some works had been paralyzed due to lack of resources, blamed on the international financial crisis.
Diario Libre reports that the complaints included repairs to city streets, provincial hospital staff, dismissal of the Pedernales police contingent that was accused of involvement in crime, bridges, aqueducts, ambulances and schools.
President Fernandez invited Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia to announce new projects, and the minister said that once the conflict with the Andino Cement company is resolved, US$1.85 billion would be released for a tourism development.
President Fernandez moderated the event, which took place at the multi-sports pavilion.
Diario Libre points out that several ministers attended the meeting, arriving in 14 government helicopters and dozens of luxury SUVs.
