A company motorbike messenger could have been confused with an assailant who had snatched a handbag from Maritza Alvarez, who was driving with her car window open at the corner of Bolivar and Jimenez Moya avenues in Santo Domingo. He was shot by an AMET agent, Air Force First Lieutenant Edgar Virgilio Felix Payano, who is under arrest in the Police Homicides Department. The injured messenger was named as Issael Rosso Pena, a native of Azua.
The agent pursued Rosso after Alvarez and her husband Luis Fabian reported the robbery. AMET spokesman Jose Jaquez said that AMET and Police agents had fired into the air but Rosso Pena "drove into the agents with his motorcycle." Rosso is being treated at the Armed Forces Central Hospital, according to a report in Diario Libre.
Listin Diario reports that witnesses said that the young messenger tried to identify himself when the bullet fired by Felix hit him.
But contradictorily, the report on the incident published in Hoy says that the couple maintains that he was who stole the bag. They insist they identified him by his clothes. Hoy reports he crossed the red light at the intersection of 27 de Febrero and Winston Churchill and ignored the call to stop made by the AMET agent who later fired at him. In a press conference, the couple defended the efforts of the AMET agent to stop the assailant.
