It took the government eight years and more than RD$6 billion to expand the two-lane 28-km Cristobal-Bani highway, including the construction of several bridges, as reported in Diario Libre. Yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez formally inaugurated the highway that was begun during the Hipolito Mejia (PRD) government (2000-2004) and completed six years into the Fernandez administration (2004-2012). Peravia governor Nelly Melo de Guerrero and San Cristobal governor Alfonso Gamalier Montas Dominguez also attended the ceremony.
During the inauguration, Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua blamed the Mejia administration for the woes affecting the current government. "After that memorable ground-breaking ceremony, the highway construction was interrupted as a result of wrong decisions taken by the administration from 2000-2004, involving changes to the contracts, and in the investment planning and the administration of funds assigned to the work," he said. President Leonel Fernandez has been in government since 2004.
The three main contractors were Consorcio Vial Dominicano, Modesto, S.A., Constructora Malespin and JM, which completed the construction.
