The director of the Metropolitan Bus Services Office (OMSA), Ignacio Ditren says the RD$5 increase that will go into effect on Monday, as reported in El Dia, is to cover the deficit with which the service is operating. He explained that 250 of its 400 buses are out of service. He said that the increase should not trigger an increase in other modes of public transport, "because they already have raised their rates."
Transport union leader Juan Hubieres, now a legislator, said that his union would not increase fares. He estimated Fenatrano buses carry 70% of passengers in the city. Hubieres has said that 1 out of every 4 Fenatrano units, purchased with a loan guaranteed by the Santo Domingo city government, are out of service.
Diario Libre reports that "carro publicos" (conchos) did take the example of OMSA and implemented fare increases. 14,700 unionized concho (multi-fare paying taxis) receive the Bonogas subsidy of RD$3,420, or RD$50.2 million a month.
Ditren says that there are 100,000 conchos, 60,000 buses and minibuses in the country, in addition to private taxis. He points out that many commuters have to spend 30% of their wages on transport.
