Dominicans did well in seven US states including New York, Rhode Island and Maryland in their election or re-election bids on 13 September.
Angel Taveras won his primary for mayor of Providence, Rhode Island, receiving 48% of the vote in a four-way race. If elected in the November general election, Taveras will become the third Dominican elected mayor in the US. The other two are Alex Blanco in Passaic, New Jersey and William Lantigua in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Likewise, three new Dominicans, Leo Medina (RI State Representative), Sabina Matos (Providence City Council) and Davian Sanchez (Providence City Council) won primary elections in Rhode Island.
In New York, Adriano Espaillat won his primary election for New York State Senate with 51% of the vote in a four-person race. Espaillat has served in the New York State Assembly since 1996, when he made history as the first Dominican elected to a state legislature in US history. Guillermo Linares won his primary election for State Assembly with 49% of the vote in a five-person race. Linares is a former New York City Councilor who also made history in 1991 when he was the elected as the first Dominican elected public official in US history, serving until 2001.
Helen Voutsinas won her primary election as District Court Judge in Nassau County (Long Island), NY.
With the exception of Providence, RI Councilor Leon F. Tejada, every Dominican- American seeking re-election in New York, Rhode Island, and Maryland won their primaries. All primary election winners must run in the general election, which takes place on Tuesday, 2 November.
