President Leonel Fernandez travels to New York City tomorrow to take part in the 65th United Nations General Assembly. After his meetings in New York, President Leonel Fernandez will travel to California, Texas, Illinois and Masachusetts. He is scheduled to return on 3 October.
During his 12-day stay in the United States, Fernandez will hold a series of bilateral meetings, give talks and attend private meetings. The President's very full schedule in New York also includes meetings with Middle Eastern business representatives, politicians and the Council on Foreign Affairs. His own speech to the General Assembly will be on Thursday.
The Dominican president's first agenda item on Tuesday consists of addressing his country's issues with the Millennium Development Goals at the United Nations.
According to El Nuevo Diario and Hoy newspapers, Fernandez will meet with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. On Tuesday, the President will meet with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. President Fernandez has been active in seeking an international role as a mediator for the Middle East. He will also be meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Later that same day Fernandez will give a talk on "Educational Revitalization in the Dominican Republic" at Community College. President Fernandez has always been a strong advocate of the importance of education, despite the fact that the World Economic Forum places the DR at the lowest levels of its 2010 education rankings.
His agenda also includes a meeting with the Dean of New York University Law School, Richard Revesz and a visit to William Patterson University in New Jersey.
On Tuesday Fernandez will meet with AES executive vice-president and COO Andres Gluski and Latin America and Africa president Andrew Vesey. He will also meet with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) director Luis Alberto Moreno.
President Fernandez is traveling with First Lady Margarita Cedeno, who will attend the Clinton Global Citizens Award ceremony at the New York Sheraton Hotel on Thursday evening.
The Presidency has yet to release his agenda for travel after his New York stay.
