The Herrera Industrialists Association (AEIH) is calling for better government spending practices. In an attack on the administration's policy of trying to solve the budget deficit by imposing more taxes, the AEIH has asked the government to put a stop to their policy of purchasing overpriced products and public works contracts.
According to El Caribe, the Council of Former Presidents of the AIEH has issued a press release warning that the government's financial crisis is so serious that it will oblige them to just pay salaries and put off obligations with suppliers.
The group of former presidents is headed by Antonio Isa Conde, Ignacio Mendez, Manuel Cabrera, Ernesto Vilalta and Jesus Moreno. They state that the problems faced by the government cannot be cured by "smoke and mirrors" that use taxes and increased tariffs and only make the tax burden even more unfair.
The World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Index ranks the DR as one of 139 countries having the most corrupt and inefficient governments.
