Police Chief Major General Jose Armando Polanco has announced that as of last Saturday, 136 police agents have been patrolling Santo Domingo's Mirador del Sur park on foot, on horseback and in motorized units, as the Police and the Ministry of Interior and Police have accepted the challenge to step up security in the park. He said a mobile unit had been stationed at Km7 of the park. The agents will work in four 17-person shifts, from 6am to 10pm.
Angel Cimentada, a frequent runner at Mirador del Sur Park, hopes the service is maintained beyond one or two months, and that security is not relaxed later as has happened in the past.
Interior & Police Minister Franklin Almeyda Rancier said that new park security corps would be sent to patrol the Botanical Gardens, the Mirador del Norte and Mirador del Este parks and the Malecon in Santo Domingo.
