The president of the Dominican Traders and Business Federation (Fenacerd) revealed on Sunday that as a side effect of the rising crime rate, many traders are making weekly "protection" payments to gangs. According to Ricardo Rosario, "In the city, in the barrios of the capital, some traders are having to pay gangs that supposedly take care of them..."
According to El Caribe, this is reminiscent of 1920s Al Capone-style extortion schemes. Because of the lack of security, many storeowners in the middle class Santo Domingo neighborhood of Gazcue have installed security cameras and hired guards to protect their establishments.
Some storeowners report that criminals riding motorcycles are robbing their motorcycle deliverymen.
Traders contacted by the CDN television news channel confirmed they were making payments in return for protection. They claim that it is useless to complain to the police, because the response is not adequate.
