In less than two years, 2,732 homicides were registered in the country, but just 153 people have been brought to trial and sentenced, barely 5%. This information was obtained from the Santo Domingo and Santiago court systems. Of the total number of murders, 1,317 occurred in 2009 and 1,415 are listed for 2010 by the Prosecutor General's Office, the National Police and the National Institute of Forensic Science (Inacif).
The reports suggest an increase in violent deaths this year. The courts have only issued conclusive sentences in 80 cases.
The percentages reported by El Caribe were unofficially obtained from research into the judicial files of the National District, Santiago and the province of Santo Domingo where most homicides occurred. Reporters had to look there because the Supreme Court of Justice does not have any official figures.
The statistics provide a sharp contrast to those provided by the District Attorney of the National District, Alejandro Moscoso Segarra, who said that the courts had dealt with 95% of all homicide cases.
According to the researchers, who used figures from the Prosecutor General's office, the National Police and Inacif, there were 265 homicides in the province of Santo Domingo, 224 in the National District and 119 in Santiago. Only the province of San Cristobal had more than 100 (116), and none of the other provinces had more than 54 (La Altagracia). The exception was San Jose de Ocoa, with just one homicide. Other interesting information dug up by the researchers was the fact that most homicides occurred on weekends, generally between 6pm and 6am.
