The First Instance Court of Santo Domingo has ordered the Santo Domingo Catholic University (UCSD) to immediately readmit students Alexander de los Santos, Maximo Ayala, Solange Gonzalez and Johanna Vasquez who were suspended after participating in events to protest the tuition cost increases at the university on 14 July. Lawyers Federico Ortiz Galarza and Elizabeth Mateo Perez from civic movement "Toy Jarto" ("I've had enough") supported the students.
Mateo Perez said, "Today the country can celebrate a historic judgment that reiterates the right to education and the strengthening of the democratic system in which no human being, political or economic power is above the Constitution and fundamental rights. Lawyer Alvaro Jose Caamano, also from Toy Jarto, said that the judgment confirms that the UCSD had violated the students' rights to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and due process and their right to education.
The judgment gives the university a three-day period to register the students, or they will be fined RD$16,000 per each day of delay.
