Kelvis Contreras was registered to take 42 credits in his medical studies in the Dominican Republic, when he went missing. Back home in Puerto Rico, his parents reported his disappearance to the Dominican authorities. They would be shown a video where he was seen going through Migration on his way to take an Air Europa flight to Spain.
The family later found out that he had been arrested in Spain and charged with attempted drug smuggling.
David Concepcion and Cecilia Bonilla have gone public with the case and their support for their son. "He needs us more than ever and we will be there," said Concepcion.
On Monday, his mother told the Puerto Rican press that the last time she had spoken to him he told her he was fine and was on his way to the movies, but communication was then cut off. She suspected something was wrong, and reported him missing after her son's landlord told her he had not been going to sleep there.
They said they were shocked to learn their son had been a "mule" because it was out of character for their 23-year old son to get into trouble. The student, who is now in jail, was initially admitted to a Spanish hospital until he expelled the drug capsules he had consumed in the DR.
