The United States will donate US$5 million to the Dominican Republic as part of the Caribbean Basis Security Initiative (CBSI). The CBSI came to be in April 2010 when the leaders of the Caribbean nations met with President Barack Obama in Trinidad and urged the US to contribute more to the fight against drug trafficking in the region on the grounds that is spurred by strong demand by US consumers. The region is a leading drug smuggling corridor after efforts to reduce trafficking across the Mexico-US border resulted in success. The US Embassy in Santo Domingo said the funds were approved by the US Congress to be used from 1 October 2010 to 1 October 2011.
Hoy reports that the money will be used in programs aimed at educating young people, as well as for evaluating the success of existing programs for first-time offenders and for at-risk youth.
The CBSI is a regional cooperation initiative for security that covers a global sum of US$45 million for the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean nations. The Obama administration has requested another US$79 million to continue the initiative.
