During his participating at the leading French travel trade show (Travel-Top Resa), the president of the National Hotel & Tourism Association (Asonahores) Julio Llibre highlighted two leading challenges for the Dominican tourism industry: land-use planning and regulation of Haitian migration, as reported in Hoy. Llibre says that the governmental lack of land-use planning has turned many tourist areas into slums. Making matters worse, thousands of Haitians have migrated to work in construction and unskilled jobs in the Dominican tourism industry. They have built slums near tourism centers, and have become a problem that needs addressing, he explains.
He was speaking at the 32nd French International Travel-Top Resa 2010 in Paris.
Llibre also advocated an emphasis on improving quality in tourism products and services.
