The Special Senate Commission rejected four of the 134 nominees for membership of the Central Electoral Board yesterday because they did not meet the requirements of 12 years of professional service or related work experience. The task of interviewing the candidates, led by a commission chaired by Cristina Lizardo, began at 9:50am and ended at 7:10pm, with a recess from noon until 3pm. A total of 47 candidates answered questions from the commission. The first person interviewed was the current head of the JCE, Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman, who praised the process and personal and moral qualities of the other nominees as he left the interview.
Nonetheless, the chief magistrate of the election tribunal refused to reveal the issues or the questions being asked by the interviewers. The second person to go in was also a serving JCE member, John Guilliani Valenzuela. In the afternoon session yesterday, judges Eddy Olivares and Aura Celeste Fernandez were interviewed, taking the first turns. Other interviewees included Porfirio Veras Mercedes, Nery Altagracia Valero Jimenez, Julian Elias Nolasco German, Gloria Rosa Mejia Cruz, Luis Marino Alvarez Alonzo, and former JCE judge Jose Luis Tavarez Tavarez.
