The Ministry of Environment is organizing the local celebrations of International Beach Clean Up Day for this Saturday, 25 September. Teams will be taking part in the clean-up and awareness programs on 68 beaches. Anyone who wants to join should check www.ambiente.gob.do/cms/formularios/view.php?id=2 (http://www.ambiente.gob.do/cms/formularios/view.php?id=2) for a list of beaches where the clean-up teams will assemble, and a registration form.
In 2009, groups of volunteers joined clean-up initiatives on 60 beaches, clearing debris from approximately 67.8 kilometers of coastline. Some 274 institutions supported the program, and 8,481 volunteers collected 24,386 bags of solid waste, or 609.65 metric tons of garbage.
