DR1 Daily News will not be updated tomorrow, Friday 24 September, on the occasion of Mercedes Day. News will be compiled for the Monday, 26 September issue.
According to tradition, in 1495 the Virgin Mary interceded in favor of the Spanish conquistadors in a battle against Indians at Santo Cerro in the central province of La Vega. While the motivation at the time was a bloody event, Dominicans have maintained the spirit and Virgin de las Mercedes is revered as the patron saint of the Dominican people. This year, the Day of las Mercedes falls on a Friday, making for a long weekend.
